DAY THREE
DAY THREE: (Faux) Leather shorts, H! by Henry Holland at Debenhams
I must confess, these shorts have not been in my wardrobe for very long. In fact, I only bought them the other week and this is the first time that I’ve worn them but I can feel that this is going to be a very productive relationship. I shot a pair for my festival story that comes out this Friday in the Daily Express (coughplugplugcough) and since then, I haven’t been about to get them off my mind.
Now, leather is tricky, particularly as a summer trend. Magazines seem to want us to believe that it’s perfectly plausible to wear leather dress in blazing heat on a packed train - as long as it’s in a nice nude colour we won’t faint or sweat - but reality is another story altogether. Pulling these on this morning, I had momentary flashes of that Friends episode where Ross wears leather trousers on a date; could I face the horror of a sweaty rush hour and then a hot, sunny day wearing what is essentially plastic in this case? Would I end up covering myself in talcum powder to get home?
Well, l thought about that when I was buying these and decided that as they’re also high-waisted (and cut very much on the tiny 14-year-old-consumer side) that I would go up a size and buy a UK12 to allow for some air/blood circulation during the hotter, sweatier moments of the season. And while I will quietly admit that these aren’t actual leather, I must say that praise is due because these shorts really do look and feel like proper soft, leather but with none of that embarrassing squeakiness that shorts in cowhide would otherwise afford.
